SUSK encourages its member USOs to raise awareness and educate students on their campuses about Ukrainian and Ukrainian-Canadian culture and history. To support their efforts, SUSK provides a variety of resources to organize events commemorating significant moments in Ukrainian and Ukrainian-Canadian history, such as the Holodomor and the Internment of Ukrainians in Canada.
HOLODOMOR
SUSK calls upon its member USOs to commemorate the Holodomor at post-secondary institutions across the country. Events may include film screenings, informational exhibits/displays, lectures, seminars, and memorial events. Our Holodomor section includes information from the Ukrainian Canadian Congress National Holodomor Awareness Committee, as well as useful resources for hosting Holodomor-related events.
INTERNMENT OF UKRAINIANS IN CANADA
Alongside other Ukrainian-Canadian community organizations such as UCC, SUSK recognizes the internment of thousands of Ukrainian and Eastern European immigrants in Canada during World War I as a devastating period in Canada’s history. As we commemorate 100 years since the end of the Canadian government’s internment camps, SUSK encourages its member USOs to educate themselves as well as those on their campuses using our provided resources and links to external sites. Individuals may also apply for the Canadian First World War Internment Recognition Fund (CWFWIRF) grant.
